Whistler Ice fishing tours a Canadian Winter Experience
Whistler is a magical place during the Winter months.
In every direction there are jagged white mountains that erupt from a lush green forest below.
Most lakes are crystal clear and the ones that are not have the hint of glacial sediment. The glacial sediment gives the lakes a greeny blue color, that is unique to this area. Through the Winter months the lakes remain well oxygenated and plant life is abundant.
The plant life harbors a ton of Aquatic life that includes freshwater shrimp, damsel nymphs, water boatmen and dragonfly nymphs. This aquatic life is a great source of protein and a staple food source throughout the Winter months.
While most Trout eat aquatic insects, their absolute favorite food is other fish. This becomes more evident as fish grow larger. Trout start out eating aquatic insects and as their mass increases, so does their food intake. So, if you are looking to catch large Trout you have to present them what they are looking for and one Company does this better than the rest, Rapala.
Recently we have started using both the Rapala Jigging Rap and the Rapala Snap Rap. At points, I have looked down my Ice hole to see 4 or 5 large Trout trying to get these hooks at the same time.
Talk about exciting! The movement of these Rapala Jigs are so erratic that they need to be slowed down to allow the Fish to catch them. It can be comical watching Trout try to catch them, yet nerve-wracking. You don’t want to stop what you were doing because, that is why the fish is there in the first place and as soon as you change, the fish is gone.
There are plenty of quality lakes for Ice Fishing within a 30 minute drive of Whistler, BC. Fish Range in size from 12″ – 30″ and can weigh as much as 12 LBS depending on lake.
It all comes down to what they are eating and what the food source is. If you want to catch quality over quantity, we have a few lakes that are a bit further of a drive and we recommend that you book a full day Ice fishing trip.
We still catch big fish on our half day ice fishing trips but to catch a monster, typically you will need to put the time in. Some people are fish magnets and some people respond well to our instructions. Typically we catch fish each and every tour, please keep in mind that we take a lot of people that have never fished before in their life. Yet they too will reel in their very first fish. Ice fishing is great for first time fisher persons. While the Ice hut is set up it blacks out the light from above. The light now comes from below the ice surface, this allows you to see fish eating your hook. Typically, as long as you keep the line tight, you will land your fish.
