Footage: Fish-fest as winter fishing begins on frozen NE China lake
The annual winter fishing festival on Lianhuan Lake in Dorbod Mongolian Autonomous County in northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province started on Saturday. When the net was pulled out from the icy waters, tens of thousands of fish surfaced. The biggest weighed about 20-25 kilograms, while the smallest, over 2.5 kilograms. The local fishermen considered it a good 50,000-kilogram harvest. According to head fisherman Li Kewen, the net was carefully designed to protect the sustainability of the lake.
“The net’s holes are big, so we only catch the big fish, leaving smaller ones out, so as to maintain a healthy ecosystem,” said Li Kewen.
Winter fishing has been an annual event on Lianhuan Lake dating back to ancient times, but unlike using traditional methods such as cutting holes in the ice and using manpower to place the net, the fishermen here use machines. The festival will run for a week, allowing visitors from across the country to see for themselves the unique culture of winter fishing.
